The UAE is one of the few countries in the region to make significant contributions to the conservation of Dugongs by conducting long-term research of the species and habitat. However, some aspects of the Dugong’s life history such as, movement patterns were not properly understood, since Dugongs are shy, secretive and difficult to observe for long periods. Advances in the field of wildlife telemetry have made it possible to acquire, detailed data on many aspects of wildlife biology including habitat use, home range size, mortality, survivorship, and movement patterns. Thus, Satellite tagging provides all the information, which would be impossible to gather otherwise. It is important for the EAD team to minimize the time and monitor the well being of the Dugong, as well as, ensure its safety throughout the capture, and tagging. Once the animal is tagged, it is measured and a DNA sample collected.
